100 Billion Suns, 2011

Produced to accompany a performance that took place during the vernissage of the 2011 Venice Biennale, this print edition reproduces colour swatches representing 3,216 Gamma Ray Bursts – the brightest explosions in the universe, which burn with a luminosity 100 billion times that of our sun – recorded by astronomers to date. These colour swatches were transformed in to a confetti cannon in Paterson's 100 Billion Suns (2011) and fired at regular intervals over a three-day period around Venice, each time creating a miniature explosion of all of these vast explosions, in just under a second.
